The Rigging 1 role independently performs routine rigging for known loads using approved lift instructions and standard configurations. The role inspects and selects gear, verifies capacity, builds routine hitches, signals crane operators when designated, and controls loads through placement. Nonroutine conditions are stopped and escalated before the approved method is changed.

• Review routine lift instructions for load weight, center of gravity, pick and set points, travel route, rigging configuration, and assigned team roles.
• Establish routine exclusion zones and verify crew positions, escape paths, signal method, travel-path clearance, and landing-area readiness.
• Perform pre-use inspections of slings, shackles, hooks, eyebolts, chain hoists, and below-the-hook devices; remove defective gear from service.
• Select routine rigging that matches the known load, hitch, connection point, environment, required reach, and rated capacity.
• Use approved charts or tables to account for sling angle and hitch configuration and verify every connection and sling leg meets the required load.
• Build standard vertical, choker, and basket hitches; verify sling seating, hardware orientation, edge protection, blocking, and tag-line placement.
• Conduct controlled test lifts to confirm balance, rigging seating, brake response, and clear travel; correct only within the approved method.
• Give accurate standard hand or radio signals for routine lifts when designated and qualified; stop when communication is unclear or interrupted.
• Guide loads through planned routes while controlling swing, rotation, and snagging; land loads on prepared support and verify stability before de-rigging.
• Use approved hoists, come-alongs, jacks, skates, rollers, and cribbing within rated limits when qualified for the task.
• Stop and escalate unknown load weight, damaged lifting points, blind or critical work, tight clearances, changed conditions, or any lift outside routine criteria.
• Communicate status, damage, deviations, and handoff needs; help Rigging Helpers learn gear inspection, staging, signaling basics, and safe positioning.

• Minimum of high school diploma or GED with 2 years of experience, or combination of equivalent experience and training.
• Current CCO Signalperson (SGP) certification.
• Current CCO RIG-I certification.
• Documented employer practical qualification for assigned rigging duties.
  
• Forklift or telehandler, aerial lift or MEWP, chain-hoist, jacking, skating, and project- or site-specific qualifications when assigned.
  
• Ability to complete routine rigging work independently and recognize when qualified technical review is required. 

Abilities:

• The position requires the ability to lift, carry, and move objects weighing up to [50 pounds] on a regular basis. Candidates must demonstrate physical strength and stamina to perform various tasks, including but not limited to, loading, and unloading, operating equipment, and assisting in the transportation of various materials. Proper lifting techniques and safety protocols must be followed to ensure personal and team safety.
• Relocates a 12 foot stepladder without assistance.
• Works at various heights up to 60 feet and can climb and maintain balance on scaffolds, aerial lifts, catwalks and all types of ladders.
• Walks, climbs, lifts, squats, crawls, kneels, pushes, pulls and reaches overhead on a routine and repetitive basis.
• Possess good vision (may be corrected vision), the ability to see in color, and the ability to hear and communicate in English.
• May use a standard ladder without exceeding the weight limit while carrying tools.
• Tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong.  It does not involve solving the problem, only recognizing there is a problem.
• Apply general rules to specific problems to produce answers that make sense.
• Combine pieces of information to form general rules or conclusions (including finding a relationship among seemingly unrelated events).
• See details at close range (within a few feet of the observer).
• Listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.
